Legendary Kenyan rappers Nonini alias the Genge Godfather, Baba Yao Juacali and a host of other Genge music advocates have come out to celebrate after the genre was recently acknowledged by the Grammys.
The two Genge heavyweights could not contain their excitement following news that Genge had been included in the 2024 Grammy Awards.
YEIYO.com had earlier reported that Genge music genre recently got it’s long-awaited recognition after being added in the 2024 Grammy Awards.
The Academy won the love of many Kenyans by voting for Genge to be among the many genres battling it out for the Grammy Awards in different categories.
YEIYO.com detailed how the Recording Academy added three new Categories, namely: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording to the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Through its official site, the academy disclosed the new categories will be introduced at the 2024 GRAMMYs, officially known as the 66th GRAMMY Awards.
Kenya’s own Genge made the cut in a move that left many locals, especially music lovers very excited.
Among them were Nonini and Juacali who are most definitely the top advocates who kept the genre going from the onset.
Taking to his official social media pages following the good news, Nonini noted that the win was huge and that he was happy that Genge was finally getting its rightly deserved recognition.
He disclosed that getting Genge on Grammys was not easy as each territory across the world battled hard to get their genres included.
“I think it’s only right that i update all by bio’s online! Kwani Kesho? Also just spoken to an insider from the Grammys all they have told me is that it was a battle to get Genge the Genre listed. All territories were fighting for their own but we had our own fighters and they fought the good fight. Message to all Kenyan Musicians they have said : ‘We now just need good music’ I said SAY LESS! #HoldMyBeer 23 is the winning year. Year if the Jordan #Mgenge2ru” Nonini wrote.
His counterpart Juacali was not left behind either as he too took to social media to celebrate the big news in the Kenyan music industry.
Juacali insisted that Genge is here to stay and could not thank Kenyans enough for supporting the movement that has finally gotten the genre international recognition.
“Ngeli bado ni ya GENGE!!!!! Mama we MADE IT!!!! #grammyawards 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥” Juacali wrote.
The two legends were joined by fellow celebrities and other Kenyans who not only celebrated them but also urged fellow countrymen to keep pushing our local genres.
Many confirmed that indeed Kenyan music is going places.
